Arbor Cultural Evolution

Arboriculture

the cultivation, management, and study of individual trees, shrubs, vines, and other perennial woody plants.

The definition is provided by Wikipedia. Something is missing.

The word is a combination of arbor and culture.

The wiki definition acknowledges the "arbor".  Arbor means "trees" in Latin.

Where the description is lacking is in its oversight of the word "culture".

"Culture" is equally as important to this definition.....

Those that practise in the field of arboriculture are most successful when they give attention to people skills.

This issue becomes more glaring in the context of the big picture. Urban forests are in a state of decline. It is clear that the problem lies with people. The best way to prevent premature demise of trees is to convince people to stop destroying them.

Attitudes about co-existing with trees in cities need to improve. I call this concept "arboricultural evolution". If this evolution is to become reality arborists need to be better communicators.

Arboriculture-- the literal breakdown.

arbor
(Latin: tree, trees)

culture
Consider the definitions below. All of the examples make sense when the concept is combined  with "trees".

These items are copied from the website http://wordinfo.info/

1. The quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc.

 2. That which is excellent in the arts, manners, etc.

 3. A particular form or stage of civilization, as that of a certain nation or period.

 4. The development or improvement of the mind by education or training.

 5. The behaviours and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group: the youth culture; the culture of the elderly; the drug culture.

 6. In anthropology, the sum total of ways of living built up by a group of human beings and transmitted from one generation to another.

 7. In biology, the cultivation of microorganisms; such as, bacteria, or of tissues, for scientific study, medicinal use, etc.; the product or growth resulting from such cultivation.

 8. The act or practise of cultivating the soil; tillage and farming.

 9. The raising of plants or animals; especially, with a view to their improvement; the product or growth resulting from such cultivation.

The evolution of the definition

Arboriculture of the past:
The care of trees, with a view to their improvement.

Arboriculture of the future
The quality in society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellence in the pursuit of healthy trees that foster healthy communities.

Attitudes need to change if the situations in urban forests are every going to improve. We need a culture shift.

The No Nonsense List of Tree Benefits

The Benefits of Trees are So Important

The benefits are the "Why". They are reason that "Trees are good". They are the reason why we in the industry do what we do.

Same Old List Needs More Oomph

I struggle with the usual list of tree benefits. It just doesn't resonate enough. Every tree advocating organisation going has its own version of the same things. You've all seen the list.

Trees...

Clean the Air
Provide Shade
Filter and absorb water
Provide wildlife habitat
Stabilise soil
Sequester Carbon
Make Oxygen
Grow fruit and supply timber
Look pretty
Raise property values
Prevent crime
Foster healing
Bring neighbourhoods together
Have pink flowers in the spring
Are Awesome

and so on. I don't dispute any of it. I believe it all, but I'm not the person who is irritated by some leaves clogging up the gutters. Or the guy who is worried that roots will affect the septic field; or clog the drains. Heaven forbid if the sun is blocked so that the grass won't grow. Never mind that trees create a mess of fallen leaves in autumn. Grandma could slip on those.

The trouble is the usual list just doesn't present well when we have to argue in favour of tree retention.

As arborists we need to be able to get this message across loud and clear. We have to draw a line in the sand over when a tree should or should not get removed.

The No Nonsense List of Tree Benefits

#1. More Trees Equals Less Lung Cancer

Do you know anyone who has died of lung cancer? I thought so.

#2. More Trees Means Less Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is very common. What's that mole on your face?

#3. More Trees Leads to Less Diarrhoea

#4. More Trees Means Fewer Animals Go Extinct

Grizzly Bears, Sea Otters, Woodland Caribou and many many more.

#5. Trees Prevent Mudslides

#6. Trees Slow Global Warming

Have you heard about the Pine Beetle Epidemic?

#7. Trees Make Oxygen

Babies use oxygen. It's more important to them than breast milk. Oxygen is also used by other forms of life on earth. All of them.

#8. Guitars Are Made From Trees

And guitars are awesome.

Dear Wealthy Land Owner... Stop Destroying Young Trees

bad pruning is way to common

Dear Wealthy Land Owner

I am referring to those of you that own grocery stores, hotels, multi family housing developments, shopping malls, casinos, light and heavy industrial complexes of all kinds. Many of you have trees that are damaged by incorrect pruning. Stop doing this.

Young trees that are incorrectly managed are robbed of their potential. They look bad and provide less benefit.  They cause problems and cost more to maintain. Above all else, they suffer and die much sooner.

Look at it this way... because this is true.

Young trees are like children. When children are harmed the damage stays with them for the rest of their life.  And their life will be less joyful.
you aren't solving any problems by doing this

So why do you do it?

I have asked some of you.

You say you need to prevent the trees from getting too big. You say it is cheaper to do it this way. You say it is quicker and more efficient. Some of you claim to believe that this was what you were supposed to do.

It is not.

So what's the big deal?

No big deal I guess, if you were the only one doing it.

The big deal is the scale of the problem. Each of you are destroying many. This is happening in every town and city across the country. You are each responsible for tens, or perhaps hundreds. Added together we are talking about millions of trees that now look bad, cause more problems, provide less benefit and die much sooner than they should.

Abuse of young trees has an enormous negative effect on the environments of cities and towns.

This is such a waste.

It needs to stop.

Keep in mind...
  • Trees grow.
  • You probably can't stop them from growing.
  • A tree must be allowed to grow as large as it must grow.
If you have a problem with this then you should talk to an arborist. They will offer some solutions.

Tell your friends to stop damaging young trees.

Terry Thrale
